All roads lead to snowboarding. With ski resorts in thirty eight of the great U.S. states, from the Alaska to Alabama, maybe not every highway and byway leads to snowboarding but for this group of road hungry vagabonds the routes of the next four months will. From east to west, north to south, everyday will be leading to riding, discovering new resorts, enjoying familiar ones and finding snowboarding everywhere.

Our trusty vessel of exploration, a thirty foot RV, was christened in on its first stop after driving a straight shot from the east coast to Utah and what better way could there be to start off an extensive criss crossing of the country than a serious powder day at one of Utah’s best resorts, Brighton.

We made our way up Big Cotton Wood canyon in great anticpation of the first big snowfall in a few weeks in Utah and when we arrived at the hill gathered a full crew of powder hounds lickin’ their chops to drop into some deep snow. Nick Russell, Ben Farrell, Noah Hausknecht, Neil Provo, Zach Seibert and Johnny Centi lapped out all day on Millicent.

40 + Inches of new snow over the weekend…

Wow what a great weekend… We had almost 4 feet of powder over the past few days… It was a super fun weekend… Bad thing is it buried the parks… We are working on rebuilding what we had. The sweet thing is with the new snow we can start to build more jumps and rail mounds… Over the past couple of nights we have started to push snow for Big Bertha. Also the Table at the bottom of Majestic should be up soon… My O My has the jumps back up and are looking fun. If you haven’t been here in awhile we have a machine cut Quarter pipe at the bottom of the Majestic park. Its a lot of fun… Hopefully we can get all caught up by the weekend.. Enjoy the powder…

JIB PIPE event wrap up

Put that in your Pipe and Jib it

The “Put that in your pipe and jib it” was a great success. Even though the weather conditions were bad, we had the Brighton Park Crew, sponsors, and kids who entered the contest helped get things together. The set up was super fun. They had everything from corrugated pipe, bonks, boxes, to rails all set up along the sides of the mini pipe. The all around snowboard winner, Everest Arnold, 18, killed it from beginning to end. He had solid lines, stomping banger tricks such as, switch back lip on the flat box, hand plants, and a sick front 180 to switch nose press on the slant box. Lisa Swift, 19, took the all around girls by laying down a front 270. 11 year old Walter Shearon won all around skier, stole the competition by doing crazy switch ups on the features. At the end of the competition, we had a heated battle for best trick between Clint Kyle, Aaron Christenson, and Tanner Kapleck. 23, Tanner Kapleckwon by stomping the trick with a D-spin 540 spine transfer. After announcing the winners, all the kids got all sorts of swag from our sponsors, Satch, Surf Utah, AMS, Blindside Skate Shop, and Revolution. We would like to thank all those who participated, Jared Winkler and the Truth Terrain Park Crew, and our sponsors for an awesome event.

Best Trick-Tanner Kapleck

Team Thunder Good Old Times Boarding

After nothing but powder for the last month, the storms cleared for a couple days. This made way for some good old fashioned boardin’. Here is a video of Team Thunder riders Pat Fenelon and Tyler Verigan doing just that at Brighton.

Graffiti Art Tells The TRUTH About Tobacco

Graffiti Art Tells The TRUTH About Tobacco

Now on Display at The TRUTH Terrain Park at Brighton, Utah

Brighton's Truth Terrain ParkThe Utah Department of Health (UDOH) is taking The TRUTH about tobacco to high-risk youth at Brighton Ski Resort with colorful urban art at The TRUTH Terrain Park. As part of a new sponsorship, The TRUTH is offering skiers and boarders discounted tickets and prizes through fighttheugly.com

The TRUTH commissioned internationally-known graffiti artists to paint the terrain park’s rails and wall ride with the theme “See through the smoke, don’t be manipulated.” The artwork depicts images of corporate devils seducing others to smoke, burning money to represent the high costs of smoking and the satisfaction that can come from saying “no” to tobacco.

“Brighton is a major smoking hangout,” says Chelsey Wilson, snowboarder and youth activist against tobacco. “I think the artwork will really grab the attention of high-risk kids.”

Brighton's Truth Terrain ParkRepresentatives of The TRUTH campaign will be at Brighton every Monday night all season long. Skiers may print a half-priced night skiing ticket from the warriorsagainsttobacco.com website for use on Monday nights. By taking part in an anti-tobacco activity, youth may enter to win an anti-tobacco snowboard designed by renowned artist Nate Williams. New signage will be posted near the lift lines reminding skiers and boarders that smoking is not allowed.

Andy Nelson and Woodrow Lash are the artists behind The TRUTH graffiti. Nelson and Lash are battling the perception that all graffiti is vandalism by tackling public service projects. Nelson, who has degrees in Art and Business, is pleased to add The TRUTH to his impressive résumé of murals painted in China, Germany, Chile, Argentina and across the U.S. He compares the act of spray painting to dancing, saying “[the art form] requires me to share a rhythm with the aerosol can.”

“Smoking is a dirty habit and so, being invited to paint an anti-tobacco mural was a privilege,” says Nelson. “The best part was coming up with concepts to illustrate the fact that smoking is basically the act of paying someone to help you kill yourself.”

Brighton's Truth Terrain ParkThe TRUTH campaign has been taking its anti-smoking message to Utah youth for 10 years. Today, Utah high school students are three times less likely to smoke than their peers nationwide, and 38 percent fewer high school students smoke today than did during the campaign’s early days in 1999. Still, every day in the U.S. more than 1,500 young people become regular smokers. About half will eventually die from a tobacco-related disease. Ninety percent of people start smoking before the age of 19 and most teens who smoke say they would not have started if they could do it over again. Nearly 190,000 Utahns continue to smoke cigarettes, and more than 1,100 Utahns die annually as a result of their own smoking.
