STOP #15 OF NORTH AMERICA’S PBRJ TOUR
The 15th stop on Volcom’s 2009 Peanut Butter and Rail Jam tour descended on Brighton, Utah on Saturday, March 28th!
There are a few resorts we visit each season on the PBRJ tour that are distinct for one reason or another. Brighton is a highlight for a few reasons; the weather always seems to be near perfect for the contest and competitors always seem to enlighten us with a new piece of flare. This year the highlight would have to be the rider who opted for sh*t kickers instead of snowboard boots! While not providing the best ankle support, they reeked of style and the attention they received was truly remarkable!

Brighton’s Jared Winkler and his terrain park crew put together a simple, yet acclaimed PBRJ contest site. The scene consisted of a double barrel down rail, a double barrel down-flat and a flat bar angled down. It was basic, but it was done right and the everyone was stoked!

The 15 & Under Division got things rolling at high noon with an impressive display of trickery. Judging by the way these guys rode, I’d say the future of snowboarding in Utah is looking good! To be brief, we saw back lips, nollie nosepresses, back nose + tail slide combos and switch front boards! It was clear the scores would be close and when the numbers were crunched, it was the mighty Jordan Morse taking 1st, Max Warbington 2nd and Brady Larson 3rd!

After witnessing shredding I just described, we were unsure what to expect of the 16 & Over Division. Would they step up? Could they raise the bar higher still? All questions were answered in short order as the older riders dropped in and destroyed everything in sight! Trick after trick was fired downrange like an M-16 emptying it’s clip in Nam! Nollie back lips, switch b/s 270 boardslide 270 outs and switch tail presses for days are just a few of the tricks worth mentioning. You’ll have to check the video to get the full meal-deal!

The ladies were up next and with more then a few notable names in attendance; we were stoked to see what would unfold! Madison Blackley and Gabrielle Maiden exploded out of the starting gates like cannons being fired on an unrelenting rebel force! Wiki Jones, Midhri Ditaru and Lisa Roullard quickly got into the act and put on a helluva show for everyone in attendance! Madison’s front board f/s 270 out and Gabby’s 50-50 f/s 360 out were showstoppers! After the final scores were tabulated, it was Madison Blackley claiming 1st, Wiki Jones 2nd and Gabrielly Maiden in 3rd! Nice work to all the girl riders!

The Open Division rounded out the day’s riding in fine form. With Brandon Hobush, Tristan Sadler and Blaze Kotsenburg in the house we knew it was showtime! Mr. Hobush unleashed his fury upon the rails like an old man turning back soup in a deli! Tristan and Blaze were on fire but it was a relative unknown by the name of Randy Vannurgen that tore the roof down! Hey attacked all three PBRJ features in a calculated, but tenacious fashion and blew everyone away! If we awarded a prize for the gnarliest bails in a day, he would have won that too! After fighting the good right, Minnesota’s Randy Vannurden came out on top with Brandon Hobish and Noah Lohr coming in 2nd and 3rd respectively! What a show!

A huge thanks goes to Jared Winkler and all the great people at Brighton. The event site was looking good all day and everyone appreciated their hard work! Thanks also to John Marchant, Jon Siris and Volcom’s own Erik “the Mule” Leines and Wyley Cotton for judging! Last but not least, thanks to all the competitors that drove, flew, swam and ran to make it out to this year’s Brighton PBRJ!
